According to McNeil Consumer Healthcare (a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary), 50 million Americans use acetaminophen each week. Acetaminophen is the generic name for Tylenol. McNeil has recommended taking no more than 6 extra strength pills per day to avoid liver damage. Remember that many other over the counter and prescription medications may also contain acetaminophen (e.g. Percocet and Vicodin). If your pain medication is not relieving your pain, speak with your doctor or pharmacist before you start adding additional pills without consultation. Also, avoid ANY alcoholic beverages when taking medication containing acetaminophen, because alcohol makes your liver more susceptible to damage.
